Introduction to the Policies Website

This policies website presents the principal policies and procedures that apply to MIT faculty and staff and, for some policies, to other members of the MIT community.

Policies & Procedures and the Employment Policy Manual

Policies & Procedures (P&P) sets forth policies and procedures that apply broadly to MIT faculty, other academic staff, research staff, non-academic staff, and, for some policies, to unpaid affiliates and other members of the MIT community. This manual includes definitions of faculty and staff appointments, addresses research and other major areas of Institute activity, and states general standards of conduct.

The Employment Policy Manual (EPM) applies generally to the non-academic staff – Administrative, Sponsored Research Staff (SRS), and Support staff. Some policies also apply to the unionized Service staff, though in the case of any discrepancy between the policies and the applicable union agreement, the union agreement will govern. A few provisions in the EPM are incorporated by reference into P&P and so do apply to faculty and other academic staff. Overall, EPM policies are more operational in nature while P&P sets forth more general policies.

Communications about Changes to Policies

MIT generally communicates major changes to the faculty and staff as relevant to the particular groups. Changes in policies are listed in the Update History in each manual.
